Red Minus 45 (2021-2022)
Digital photographic images. Milk, paint, water, food, medicine, and found objects.
In 2020, whilst researching for my Master's Degree, I discovered the work of writer, poet and activist Audre Lorde. And in particular her concept of biomythography. This is a style of narrative that weaves together myth, history, and biography(1). It often pertains to people of cross-cultural or mixed-heritage backgrounds. I recognised a connection with this in my own history and experiences.
Wanting to ground this work in something tangible and almost mundane, I used milk as a basis for this body of work. Over a series of days, I filled a bath with the milk, as well as paint and water. Then added relevant objects, food, and other artefacts with personal resonance. By stirring this mixture the work incorporated movement and elements of chance. This was captured using a slow shutter speed.
Afterwards, I worked with adjustments to the luminosity and colour of each image. This resulted in a series of inversions that felt seem illuminated from within.
